Video: Tag Documents On The Mac With TagIt

The good and the bad thing about tagging documents on the Mac is that there are a bunch of different ways to do it.

If you want to get into tagging, I always recommend that you use software that uses the OpenMeta standard. That way, different applications can all access the same tags.

A free and easy way to get started tagging documents is TagIt by Ironic Software, the company that developened OpenMeta in the first place. This video shows how to do it.

I use Tagit because I don't know of a more simple and convenient tool for tagging documents that is free. I specifically use it instead of iPhoto to organise my photos. This way I can keep my photos synced between Windows Mac and Linux – I use all three.

The main problem with Tagit is that openmeta data is not useful to Windows and Linux. I recently wrote a blog post about how I am dealing with this – by writing bash scripts to duplicate the data across formats. I included a script in my post. http://theadventuresofsuperdoc.blogspot.co.uk/201…
I expect I'll add another soon. I hope someone will come up with a more user friendly solution of making photo organising more cross-platform compatible.
