Evernote Quick Note

Evernote Quick Note

One thing I appreciate about Evernote is how they are constantly adding new product improvements. This post, however, is about Quick Note: an improvement that was introduced to the Mac client five months ago.

Why am I posting about it now? Two reasons: I realized that I have never posted about it before, and I am finding it more and more useful for quick capture to Evernote.

What Is Quick Note?

If you have a Mac, you can type Ctrl-Cmd-N. Even if Evernote is not running, a little window will pop up.

You can type or paste information that you want to save to Evernote, and when you are done, just hit Save To Evernote or hit Cmd-Enter. Your note will be saved to your default notebook.

Nice, fast, and friction-free.

I Hate Quick Note! How Do I Get Rid Of It?

Evernote power users may have noticed that Ctrl-Cmd-N was the old keyboard shortcut to create a new note the “normal” way.

That shortcut has now been moved to Ctrl-Option-Cmd-N, but if you’d like, you can set things back to how they used to be.

Just go to Evernote > Preferences in the Mac client, and click on the Shortcuts tab. You can set the keyboard shortcuts to whatever you’d like.

What About Windows Users?

Quick Note is only available in the Mac client, but you can accomplish something somewhat similar in Windows. With Evernote running, hit Ctrl-Alt-N
and it will bring up the new note Window. Type what you’d like, and hit Esc which will close the window.

Quick Note

I find the Quick Note feature of Evernote handy for just getting something into Evernote to process later. I do wish that there was some way to assign tags. For example, if it supported the Evernote e-mail shortcuts, that would be awesome.

Do you use Quick Note? How do you rapidly get stuff into Evernote?

I just now tried this with my Windows Vista computer both with Evernote running in the background and without it already running. It worked beautifully both times! It's definitely something I'm going to use. Thanks!

I have a windows computer. I found that I need to have Evernote running in the background to get Ctrl-Alt-N to work, but it does work. I will have to remember that shortcut! Thank you.
