Reader Question: What software do you use for Business Cards?

In my line of work (that is to say, hanging out in my basement) I don’t get a lot of business cards. Since I’ve had a few questions recently about which software to use for business cards, I thought I’d throw it out to you guys to see if you have any favorite software/workflow.

So, what do you use to scan and store business cards? Do you send them to a contact management system or just OCR them to search later?

I use CardIris– mostly because it came with my ScanSnap, admittedly. I've had very mixed results: sometimes it scans the information perfectly, and other times it botches it up terribly. I can't say that I would recommend it hardily, but it's not bad.

If there were an alternative that was low in cost, I might consider switching– but frankly I don't get enough business cards to really need it often.

Although I have a ScanSnap, I wasn't crazy about the software for cards (it is perfect at everything else). So, I finally broke down and bought a new Cardscan Executive – mainly for the software. Specifically for biz cards, I don't know who does it better (I could be wrong, but I'm happy with it). The ScanSnap stays on my desk. The Cardscan stays in a drawer and I'll scan in batches or after a show.

Guys – check out the news. Shoeboxed just released a free business card reader app for the iPhone. Download the app (again, free), take a photo of the business card, press submit and it's in your Address Book. Too easy!

    Check it out at: http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/shoeboxed-business
