Kickstart A Scandy For Smartphone Scanning

ScandyI consider myself a generally low-vice person. I don’t smoke, I don’t really gamble, I am not a big drinker (my love affair with the Negroni notwithstanding), and I don’t even have cable TV. However, one addiction that I can’t seem to get rid of is Kickstarter.

To me, Kickstarter is one of those things that makes me so happy to live in the time of the Internet. The concept that a person or group of people can come up with an idea for something that meets a need, and a group of like-minded people around the world can come together and help fund it, is just fantastic to me.

I’ve funded everything from iPhone stands to Nixon documentaries to men’s fashion TV shows1 to concert tour recordings on Kickstarter. I can only think that the folks at Scandy must have somehow known this, because they reached out to me to let me know about their Kickstarter project. Talk about an easy mark.

The Scandy Kickstarter Project is looking to raise $15,000 to build what is essentially a smartphone scanning stand. Check out the video for more information, though the funding levels they talk about in the video are a bit out of date.

I have written about iPhone document scanning before, and I am a big fan of it. The problem that the Scandy is looking to solve is that it can be difficult to hold the phone at the right height/position to get the scan just right/clear.

The Scandy is not for everyone, as this incredibly jackass-erific TechCrunch post will show. If you are doing one-off scans from time to time, you probably don’t need this.

However, if you find yourself using your phone a lot in stationary situations (the library, kitchen, etc.), it is a clever idea and I am glad they are doing it.

I funded at the $20 level, which at the time of writing this there are 69 spots left. For that you get an anodized finish Scandy and a capacitive stylus.

If this is something you might need, or if you just think it is a clever idea, why not throw them a few bucks at their Kickstarter project. I love encouraging innovation in the scanning space.

This looks very good. I looked around on Amazon to see if there were similar stands but couldn't find any. There are quite a few little tripods, but they seem designed for taking photos, not scanning something that's down on a tabletop. I suspect that if you tried to tilt the phone to face completely downward on a normal mini-tripod, it might fall over and/or the tripod feet might get into the picture. I do hope it gets fully funded in time!

Thanks for the comment ecee. I can definitely see how it would be handy for many people.
