Macworld: What Makes SugarSync Better?

Whenever I do a post about online backup or file syncing, I almost always get a comment or a tweet like this one. Essentially, “hey, how come you didn’t mention my favorite: SugarSync?”

I was happy to see that SugarSync was at Macworld Expo, so I dropped by their booth to ask them what the fuss was about.

Of course, it is almost impossible to get into a discussion about file syncing without bringing up the D-word, but the guys at the booth were cool about it and obviously get questioned on the comparison a lot.

Good review – there are a few recent changes as of June 2011:
You get 5GB of space with the FREE version, but now there is no restriction to the number of computers you can sync/backup (up from 2).
It gives you the ability to upload and sync any folder on your computer.
It is the only service that offers such a broad device and OS support with apps for iPad/iPhone, BlackBerry, Android, Symbian, not to mention your computer!

Great post, Brooks. I tried both SugarSync and Dropbox to figure out from experience which better met my needs. Until now, I liked SugarSync better because it integrated seamlessly with the way I work. My files are organized in different folders (further categorized in subfolders), and some subfolders I want to sync/backup and others not. Using Dropbox would have meant changing the whole structure of how I organize my documents, and separating things that usually belong together. This is why I chose SugarSync. But I heard that Dropbox now offers addons that let you sync any folder on your computer (DropboxFolderSync for Windows and MacDropAny for Mac) to your dropbox. This might make me reconsider…!

Yeah, it has always been possible to use Symlinks with Dropbox but it is not something most normal humans would want to mess around with. It's nice that these new apps are coming out to make things easier.
