Video: Use Quick Menu With The Fujitsu ScanSnap

A few of my posts have discussed how to disable the Quick Menu in ScanSnap Manager. Well, recently Fujitsu posted a good video on all the features of the Quick Menu and how to use it.

How do you roll? Quick Menu on or off? Sound off in the comments.

ScanSnap Snow Leopard fix to be available end of November?

Update Nov 13, 2009: The Snow Leopard fix has been released. See this for more information!

According to this tweet by @ScanSnapIT (Fujitsu’s official ScanSnap Twitter account), the fix for the ScanSnap with OSX Snow Leopard issues will be available at the end of November.

They give a link to go to to get emailed when there are updates, but that link doesn’t seem to work. Here is the correct one: https://www-s.fujitsu.com/us/services/computing/peripherals/scanners/sl_form.html .

Of course, we’ll also let you know about any updates too so stay tuned.

Thanks to DocumentSnap user BoilingConcrete (great name) for the tip.

Fujitsu ScanSnap on Windows 7 – Your Experiences?

windows7home.jpg

Well, Microsoft’s latest version of Windows, Windows 7, gets released today. Similar to what we did with OSX Snow Leopard, I thought I’d make a post so that we can share our experiences using the Fujitsu ScanSnap with it.

I haven’t seen anything official from Fujitsu, but if I had to guess I would say that the ScanSnap S1500 will probably be OK, but the older models such as the S510 and S300 will require a bit more work to get working.

Since I have neither Windows 7 nor a Windows ScanSnap, I am relying on Google and you guys here.

This post from SevenForums seems to have a workaround to get the older ScanSnaps working.

Hopefully the Windows 7 release goes a bit more smoothly than the Snow Leopard one did. If you have any experience getting your ScanSnap working with Windows 7, leave a comment and let us know. I’ll post any relevant updates here.

Update: Fujitsu has posted a support bulletin outlining what will be supported when. Basically:

  • S1500: End of November 2009
  • S300: End of November 2009
  • S510: End of December 2009
  • S500: End of December 2009 (but it will not support 64-bit OS)

Using Mac OSX Preview To Password Protect Your Documents

This tip comes from DocumentSnap reader A.S. (thanks!).

If you want to add a password to a PDF document, that functionality is built in to Mac OSX’s Preview application.

For Windows users, you can use a free program like PDFCreator to do something similar.

Here we go:

  • Load up your PDF in Preview
  • Go to File -> Print
  • Click on the PDF icon in the bottom left and choose Save To PDF

  • Hit the Security Options button

  • You now have options to set a password to open, set a password to be able to copy text (cool) and even set a password to be able to print

  • Now when you go to open the PDF, the user gets prompted for the password

Do you use any other methods to password protect or, even better, totally encrypt your PDFs before sending them to someone? Leave your strategies in the comments.

Also, if someone has a clever way to automate this process for a bunch of PDFs at once (using Automator or an Applescript?) that would be great too.

Dropbox Iphone App Is Out

dropboxiphone.jpg OK, this has been out for quite a while. I realize that. However, I just had laser eye surgery and have been down for the count for a little while so you’ll have to cut me some slack here.

I still want to mention this because Dropbox is one of my favorite services, and their new free iPhone app is very cool.

Here is a blog post where they give a sneak peak of it, and you can get it from iTunes here.

It’s really cool to be able to access your Dropbox files on the go on your iPhone or iPod Touch (it has syncing capabilities for offline but to be honest I have not played with that yet).

Anyone else using it? What other DocumentSnap-ish iPhone apps do you recommend?

Amazon Kindle Finally Goes International

kindle-300px._V251249384_.jpg Many people think that there are two classes with respect to the Amazon Kindle: those who don’t understand it, and those who can’t live without it. However, there has been a third group that doesn’t get talked about as much: those who live outside of the US that covet it from afar.

Well, now for many of you in the third group can rejoice: Amazon has released a “US and International” version that will work in around 100 countries, and Amazon will ship the Kindle to those countries as well (!).

The US and International Wireless version is the same as the 6″ US Wireless version (not the DX). It has the same 8″ x 5.3″ x .036″ size, and (at the time of writing this) it is $279 USD which is a $20 premium over the US version.

Alas, the Kindle is not available in all countries. I went through the DocumentSnap server logs to see what the top countries that people come from, and decided to check out if the Kindle is available.

Keep in mind that this is as of October 14, 2009. So if you are reading this after this date, you should go to the Kindle page and check for the latest information.

Canada: No (really?!)

United Kingdom: Yes!

Germany: Yes!

France: Yes!

Switzerland: Yes!

Australia: Yes! (you need to order from a special page though)

Japan: Yes!

Netherlands: Yes!

Belgium: Yes!

China: No

Italy: Yes!

Sweden: Yes!

For your country, or to check the wireless coverage map for where you are, check Amazon’s Kindle page and search for your location.

Sorry Canada, along with having no Hulu, no MiFi, and no Obama, you still get no Kindle love.

For you users from the rest of the world, are you going to jump on getting a Kindle now that you are able to? Anyone in a country that doesn’t have the Kindle yet? Any US Kindle lovers want to share their experiences?
